The Government of Canada is committed to funding up to 40 per cent of eligible costs for the extension of Vancouver Millennium Line, the second rapid transit line of the SkyTrain system.
The financing will cover the future planning and business case development for the proposed extension of the line from Arbutus Station to the University of British Columbia (UBC).
TransLink is currently undertaking the technical planning work and engagement with stakeholders, the public and Indigenous Nations. This will help company to confirm the objectives of the potential SkyTrain extension and evaluate possible route options and station locations. Further engagement opportunities will be provided if decision-makers direct us to proceed to create a business case for a preferred alternative.
In October 2020, the Mayors’ Council stated its intention to complete Transport 2050 and to refresh the 10-Year Vision in 2021-2022. These efforts will identify rapid transit network priorities that may include a potential Millennium Line UBC Extension.
The Vancouver Millennium Line extension will better connect students, employees, and residents who travel between UBC and other parts of Metro Vancouver with a high speed and frequent SkyTrain service, reducing travel time between Commercial-Broadway and UBC for riders by more than 20 minutes per trip.
“Whether people are commuting to work, going to school, or safely coming back together with family and friends, it is critical that we provide the better, faster transit options that British Columbians deserve. We’re pleased to be making record investments in infrastructure, creating thousands of jobs, and this partnership with the federal government will help keep people moving while we build a strong recovery that benefits everyone,” John Horgan, the Premier of British Columbia, said.
The city is also constructing the Millennium Line extension from VCC-Clark station to Broadway and Arbutus. USD 2.1 billion is the value of the project which will be constructed by a JV of Acciona and Ghella.
Recently, the federal government announced it will provide funding for another transit project to expand the SkyTrain transit network.
