An explosion on Wednesday morning, 2 September, near the main railway station in Augsburg, Germany, led to a large-scale police operation and the temporary closure of the Hauptbahnhof. The German authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the blast and examining a suspicious object subsequently found in the vicinity of the station.
According to the North Swabian Police, the explosion in Augsburg took place at around 3.15 am in the Bahnhofstraße area. An object, about which the authorities have not yet provided details, exploded, and two people sustained minor injuries.
The victims are a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old boy, both Ukrainian nationals. According to the police, the two suffered trauma caused by the loud noise of the explosion.
The police are at the scene with a large number of officers and, with the support of specialists from the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office, have launched an investigation.
Augsburg Central Station closed
Following the incident, the police cordoned off a large area around the site of the explosion. The situation became more complex after a suspicious object was identified at Augsburg Central Station.
For this reason, the Hauptbahnhof was temporarily closed and train services were suspended. A large number of police officers were deployed to the scene, and specialists from the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office (Bayerisches Landeskriminalamt – LKA) are assisting with the investigations.
The police have not yet determined the cause of the explosion and have not provided any information regarding the nature of the suspicious object found at the station. The authorities state that the investigation is ongoing and the exact circumstances of the incident are yet to be established.
The operation has also disrupted traffic in the area around the station, where restrictions have been put in place to allow security and inspection operations to take place.
The German authorities will provide further information as the investigations progress. Until the situation is clarified, the area around the station remains subject to security measures.
