European Sleeper acquires GreenCityTrip

European Sleeper has announced the acquisition of the GreenCityTrip brand from Flywise Travel, marking a major step in its strategy to make night train travel more accessible to a wider audience. Under its new ownership, GreenCityTrip will continue to operate as an independent tour operator within European Sleeper, offering package holidays by night train.

The move strengthens European Sleeper’s ability to provide a complete travel experience, combining transport and accommodation into one seamless offering for passengers seeking sustainable, convenient travel options across Europe.

Expanding reach and service

European Sleeper, known for its successful Brussels–Amsterdam–Berlin–Prague night train route, has carried over 200,000 passengers and operated more than 650 trains in just two years. With plans to expand services to Barcelona and Milan, the company sees the acquisition as key to diversifying its offer and attracting new market segments.

“This acquisition offers many synergies for European Sleeper,” said Chris Engelsman, co-founder of European Sleeper. “The GreenCityTrip package holidays are a perfect complement to our own offering of international train tickets and serve a market segment where European Sleeper is not yet strongly represented. Moreover, after the acquisition, it will become much easier to expand the range of package holidays — both geographically and into new market segments.”

A proven concept in sustainable travel

Launched in October 2021 by Flywise Travel, GreenCityTrip has successfully promoted sustainable rail holidays with a model that combines affordable travel and city breaks. Its partnerships with major Dutch retail brands such as Albert Heijn, HEMA, and Kruidvat have helped introduce rail-based tourism to a broader customer base.

With the transition, Pascal van de Sande, who recently joined European Sleeper, will become Managing Director of GreenCityTrip.

“GreenCityTrip has already shown how attractive and accessible sustainable rail travel can be,” said Pascal van de Sande. “Under the European Sleeper umbrella, we will build on that success — developing new travel concepts that make it easier for travellers to choose the night train as part of their holiday experience.”

Strengthening cooperation

The two companies have collaborated closely since early 2024, and this acquisition formalises their partnership. Flywise Travel will continue to operate as a tour operator but will no longer focus on night trains. The GreenCityTrip brand will remain in use, maintaining its existing portfolio of journeys while gradually expanding under European Sleeper’s direction.

The acquisition is set to be formally completed in the coming weeks.
