Romania’s rail infrastructure manager, CFR SA, has signed a contract with Porr Construct for the modernisation of Lot 5: Cap X Băile Herculane – Cap X PO Nou Poarta, a section of the Craiova – Caransebeș line.

The contract is valued at an estimated RON 2 billion (EUR 408 million) and covers the modernisation of the railway line passing through Drobeta Turnu Severin, a city in Mehedinți County located on the northern bank of the Danube.
The contract duration is five years, including one year allocated for the design phase, followed by four years of construction works, both to be undertaken by Porr Construct.
The line will be modernised in accordance with the Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSIs). New or upgraded electronic/electrodynamic interlocking systems and ERTMS Level 2 will be installed at stations and along the main line. Upon completion, the section will support an axle load of 22.5 tonnes, and each station will be capable of accommodating 740-metre-long trains.
The works include the modernisation of seven tunnels, civil engineering works at stations, and the upgrade of electrification systems throughout the section.
In June 2025, CFR SA awarded a separate contract for Lot 4: Cap X Drobeta Turnu Severin – Cap X Băile Herculane, also part of the Craiova – Drobeta Turnu Severin – Caransebeș route, to a consortium led by IC İçtaş İnşaat Sanayi ve Ticaret Anonim Şirketi and Societatea Comercială Rotary Construcții Mentenanță. This contract is valued at RON 2.3 billion (EUR 440 million), with design works to be completed within one year and the upgrade works to be carried out over five years.
The modernisation of the Craiova – Caransebeș line, which forms part of the Orient/East-Mediterranean Corridor within the TEN-T network, is co-financed through the Transport Programme 2021–2027, the state budget, and other financial institutions.
The overarching aim of this investment project is to enhance Romania’s economic competitiveness by developing transport infrastructure that supports economic integration into the EU. The project is expected to contribute to the expansion of the internal market, stimulate investment, promote sustainable transport, and improve connectivity within the European railway network.
