EUR 391 million contract for Burgos–Vitoria high-speed line

Adif AV has awarded a EUR 391 million contract the construction of the trackbed for the first 8.4 km section of Burgos–Vitoria high-speed line, between Pancorbo and Ameyugo.

Burgos–Vitoria high-speed line

Once this contract is formalised, construction works on this new line will commence.

The work includes the construction of the infrastructure on which the line will be laid. This section of the high-speed line, which passes through the province of Burgos, will feature double track with standard gauge.

The project represents a new technical and engineering challenge, as 77% of the 8.4 km section runs through a sequence of three tunnels and three viaducts. These structures will enable the new line to integrate harmoniously into its surroundings and to interface appropriately with existing infrastructure it intersects, such as the N-I road, which it crosses on two occasions.

Among the most notable features along the route are the 4 km Pancorbo tunnel and the 1.1 km adjacent viaduct. This viaduct has been designed with an aesthetically pleasing solution, incorporating two V-shaped piers on either side of the central span where it crosses the N-I road.

Other key structures on this section include the 611-metre Ameyugo I and the 524 metres Ameyugo II tunnels, as well as the viaducts over the 28-metre long La Mala stream and the N-I (176 m).

The new high-speed line involves the development of a new double-track, standard-gauge railway line, along with a single-track bypass at Miranda de Ebro. This will allow trains to either stop at the town or continue running non-stop around its outskirts.

The route defined in the informative study has been broken down into seven sections for construction purposes. In addition to the intermediate section currently being tendered – between Pancorbo and Ameyugo – work is progressing on the following sections:

  • Burgos–Valle de las Navas rail bypass;
  • Valle de las Navas–Piérnigas;
  • Piérnigas–Pancorbo;
  • Ameyugo–Manzanos; and
  • integration in Miranda de Ebro, Manzanos–La Puebla de Arganzón, and La Puebla de Arganzón–Iruña de Oca.

Burgos–Vitoria high-speed line is a strategic project for the development of the Atlantic Corridor, aimed at connecting the Basque Country to the high-speed rail network and linking this network with the French border in the west. The new line extends the Madrid–Valladolid–Burgos high-speed line not only to the Basque Country, where it will link up with the high-speed network currently under construction between the region’s three capital cities, but also towards the French border.
