EUR 25.5 million for railway project in Italy

italian_regional_trainThe European Commission adopted the major project “Collegamento ferroviario dell’Aerostazione di Bari-Palese con l’area metropolitana di Bari”, worth approximately EUR 41 million, with a contribution from the European Regional Development Fund and the Cohesion Fund of EUR 25.5 million. The project included in the TEN-T comprehensive Scandinavian-Mediterranean corridor network aims to improve the connection with the main transport airport node, therefore enhancing the quality of railway services in the Puglia region and supporting the modal shift from car to railway.
The objective of the project is to encourage a modal shift for nearly 660 000 inhabitants living in the provinces of Bari and Barletta-Andria-Trani (37% of the total population of Puglia). Expected results include train services every 35 minutes on average (41 trains per direction during the week, 66 on Saturday and 46 on Sunday) with a reduction of a total travel time of 14 minutes from Bari central station to the Karol Wojtyla Airport, this resulting in a time saving of around 15 minutes compared to the other transport alternatives.
This project is co-financed through Regional Operational Programme “Puglia” 2007-2013, under Priority Axis V “Reti e collegamenti per la mobilità”.
