EU commissioner considers Rail Baltica an important project to link Baltics with EU network

RailBaltica-246x300In an interview to Diena, European Transportation Commissioner Violeta Bulc said that Rail Baltica project has a great importance for connecting the Baltics states with the European transportation network.
”The Rail Baltica project will fulfill an important task, as it will connect the Baltics with the European transportation network. This is a very important transportation corridor. I am happy that the three Baltic countries have been able to successfully work together on this project. We hope that it will be implemented as planned,” Violeta Bulc said.
Rail Baltica corridor is one of nine corridors the European Commission has decided to support. Discussions on this were concluded last year.
At the moment, the Baltics are quite isolated from Europe’s transportation network, thus the Rail Baltica high-speed rail project has especial importance, European Transportation Commissioner Violeta Bulc explained.
”For example, Latvia’s rail system is not really connected to Europe. Yes, you have a good connection with Russia, but not with the EU. This is an important factor when speaking about connections,” Bulc emphasized.
