EIB proposes new loan for Pune Metro

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is proposing a EUR 235 million financing for the extension of Pune Metro Corridor 1 towards north and south. EUR 475 million is the eligible cost of the project covering the construction of 10.5 km of new metro sections with 9 stations.

Pune Metro Corridor 1

The project concerns the extensions towards north on the PCMC – Nigdi route and the South on the Swargate – Katraj route. The first extension between PCMC (Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation) and Nigdi includes the construction of four stations while the south extension from Swargate to Katraj will be served by three stations. The first 7 km section of Pune Metro Corridor 1, known as the Purple Line, between PCMC and Phugewadi was officially inaugurated in March 2022. The second 7 km extension was launched in August 2023, linking Phugewadi and District Court, and last year the last section between District Court and Swargate opened, completing the full 16.5 km line.

With these extensions, Pune Metro Corridor 1 is expected to significantly enhance urban mobility in the Pune metropolitan region. The northern extension to Nigdi will improve connectivity for residents of the rapidly growing Pimpri-Chinchwad area, reducing travel time and easing congestion on arterial roads. Similarly, the southern extension to Katraj will provide a direct and efficient link for commuters traveling from southern suburbs to the central business districts, boosting economic activity and promoting sustainable urban transit.

Once completed, the extended Pune Metro Corridor 1 will integrate seamlessly with other modes of public transport, including buses and regional rail networks. This integration will allow passengers to switch modes more efficiently, contributing to a reduction in private vehicle dependency and carbon emissions. The project also includes modern amenities at stations, enhanced safety features, and energy-efficient metro operations, further establishing Pune Metro Corridor 1 as a backbone of the city’s long-term urban transport strategy.

In October, the EIB has provided a EUR 289.5 million in financing for Nagpur and Pune metro networks. A EUR 240 million loan has been granted for the extension of Nagpur metro, and EUR 49.5 million are delivered for Pune metro.

In Pune, the additional financing will complement the EIB’s previous EUR 600 million investment, covering the construction of two metro lines totalling 33.2 km, 30 stations and 102 modern metro cars.
