EIB funds EUR 150m Málaga Metro Line 2 extension

The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Junta de Andalucía (Andalusia’s regional government) have signed a EUR 150 million loan agreement to finance the extension of Málaga Metro Line 2, linking Guadalmedina with the future Hospital Civil de Málaga station.

The Málaga Metro Line 2 extension aims to encourage greater use of public transport, reducing journey times, traffic congestion, and air pollution in the city. It involves the construction of 1.8 km of underground infrastructure and three new metro stations. Once completed, the extension is expected to enable an additional 4.7 million journeys across Málaga’s metro network each year.

This investment aligns with the EIB’s sustainable transport policy and contributes to its strategic priority of climate action and environmental sustainability for 2024-2027. The initiative also supports economic, social, and territorial cohesion within the European Union, as Andalusia’s income per capita remains below the EU average.
