EIB funding for Plzeň tram procurement

The public transport company in Plzeň, PMDP, received a EUR 50 million EIB loan for the procurement of new trams and trolley buses, including the reconstruction of depot facilities and the modernisation of the power supply infrastructure.
The project includes the acquisition of 34 trams and approximately 34 trolley buses to replace the existing vehicles.
In 2018, PMDP ordered 22 ForCity Smart trams from Škoda Transportation under a EUR 38.75 million contract, which also includes an option for additional trams. The three-section, bi-directional, high-capacity trams will be 100% low-floor.
The condition of the tram depot in the Plzeň district of Slovany has been unsatisfactory for a long time in terms of capacity and the technical condition of buildings, equipment and facilities for employees. The project envisages the reconstruction of the depot and the installation of clean solutions for noise reduction, for the use of rainwater to wash vehicles and for the construction of green roofs. The construction will start in 2020 and run under full depot operation. By the end of 2022 the new depot will be completed.
“I am sure that by modernising the depot we will contribute to more pleasant living conditions in the neighbouring buildings,” Michal Kraus, PMDP’s CEO, said.
