Egypt launched locomotive tender

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has published the Egyptian National Railways’ tender for the procurement of up to 100 new diesel electric locomotives. EUR 290 million is the value of the project.
Tendering for the contract is expected to begin in the 4th quarter of 2019.
The new locomotives will operate the passenger long distance routes.
Currently, Egypt is investing in the acquisition of new rolling stock.
In 2018, ENR signed a EUR 1 billion contract with Transmashholding-Hungary consortium for the supply of 1,300 coaches, which will be delivered within the next 5 years.
With Talgo, Egyptian National Railways signed a EUR 158 million contract for the delivery of 6 trainsets composed of a diesel-electric locomotive, a power car and 14 passenger cars. They are expected to enter services in 2021 – 2022. The Spanish company has also signed an agreement for the production of new rolling stock which will serve Egyptian railway market.
In addition, in September 2018, ENR and Progress Rail signed a MoU for new locomotives and the modernisation of the existing locomotive fleet.
