Digital signalling enters service on the East Coast Main Line

Passenger trains have used digital in-cab signalling on the East Coast Main Line for the first time, marking a major milestone in the modernisation of one of Britain’s most important rail corridors. The development forms part of the government-funded East Coast Digital Programme, backed by GBP 1.4 billion (approximately EUR 1.65 billion).East Coast digital signalling

The project is being implemented by Siemens Mobility, which acts as the train control partner and systems integrator and is responsible for delivering the European Train Control System (ETCS). The company tested and validated the technology remotely using its digital-twin integration laboratory in Chippenham, Wiltshire, helping to minimise disruption to train services while maintaining the highest safety standards.

The 08:05 Great Northern service to Moorgate on 31 August became the first passenger train to use the new system on the main line after departing Welwyn Garden City station.

The East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP) will progressively replace conventional lineside signals with a digital system that provides drivers directly with information on permitted speed and movement authority via an in-cab display.

In the longer term, digital signalling is expected to improve the efficiency and reliability of rail services while also reducing their environmental impact. The technology enables more effective traffic management and disruption recovery, while reducing dependence on trackside equipment.

It also contributes to improved safety by continuously supervising train speed and, where necessary, automatically intervening to bring a train to a stop.

ETCS expands between Welwyn and Hitchin

The first phase of ETCS deployment on the East Coast Main Line involves Great Northern’s modern Class 717 trains, which can now transition between conventional signalling and digital in-cab signalling when entering and leaving the Welwyn–Hitchin section.

The 24-km section has been commissioned as an overlay system, meaning trains can operate using either conventional signalling or the digital ETCS system. This approach allows drivers to be trained and the technology to be progressively tested before its wider deployment.

Additional train types and passenger services are scheduled to begin using digital in-cab signalling from 2027. The project represents a significant step towards the first full-scale deployment of digital signalling on a major intercity main line in Britain.

The implementation of ETCS on the East Coast Main Line is part of a broader programme to digitalise Britain’s railway network. On certain sections, Great Northern services already operate exclusively under ETCS Level 2 supervision, including between Moorgate and Finsbury Park, where the railway operates without conventional lineside signals.

The extension of digital signalling between Welwyn and Hitchin therefore represents the next stage in transforming one of Britain’s busiest main lines into a digitally operated railway, with the potential to improve capacity, safety and service reliability for both passenger and freight transport.
