The public transport authority of Budapest, BKK, has awarded Főmterv the design contract for the second stage of the Pest-Buda tram connection. Known as Pesti fonódó tram project, the line will link the tram networks of North Pest and South Buda.

In addition to preparing the construction and planning documentation, Főmterv is also responsible for conducting the necessary permitting procedures, obtaining approvals, compiling tender documentation for selecting the contractor, and preparing both the feasibility study and the environmental impact assessment.
The planning phase includes designing a 2.2 km tram extension, including fully accessible step-free stops, the revamp of roads access, and the redevelopment of Nyugati Square. Special attention will be given to the surrounding urban environment of the future tram line, and several existing stops will be redesigned for better accessibility.
The design works will aim to return trams to Bajcsy‑Zsilinszky Street and the southern section of Váci Road, offering passengers an attractive public transport option through the city centre. The investment will create a tram axis that crosses the capital entirely, enabling comfortable and rapid travel in Budapest without transfers.
The project’s design is to be carried out under the Integrated Transport Development Operational Programme Plus (IKOP Plus), a EU co-financed funding programme. As a funding decision has not yet been made and the Hungarian state has not signed a support agreement with BKK, the planning costs are being pre‑financed by the Municipality of Budapest. The execution designs are expected to be completed by the second half of 2028.
The Pest-Buda tram connection project covers the reinstallation of the tram tracks between Deák Ferenc Square – the historic centre of Pest, on the east side of the Danube, and central Budapest, and Lehel Square, in the north-east of the Budapest city centre, 2 km north of Deák Ferenc Square.
