Delivery of regional trains for Trenitalia completes in May

The delivery of 77 new regional trains for Trenitalia, Italy’s national rail operator, will be completed by May, announced Gianpiero Strisciuglio, General Manager and CEO of Trenitalia, during the conference “Southern Italy after the PNRR,” organized by the Merita Foundation in Naples.

The new trains are financed through National Recovery and Resilience Plan funds, totaling EUR 569 million. Also in Naples, Gianpiero Strisciuglio stated on April 18, during the Feuromed 2026 event, that Trenitalia “will have, in the first half of 2027, 80% of its regional trains of the latest generation. Our rolling stock fleet will be the youngest in Europe, with an average age between 5 and 10 years, while the European average frequently exceeds 20 years.”

Contracts for new regional trains

The new regional trains for Trenitalia are being supplied by Hitachi Rail and Alstom. To date, Alstom has delivered 32 Pop trains worth EUR 175 million. Trenitalia has signed a framework agreement with Alstom for 150 electric multiple units worth a total of EUR 900 million, and by exercising certain options, the Italian operator has also ordered 54 Coradia Stream regional trains worth EUR 300 million.

Hitachi Rail has delivered 53 Rock trains to date, worth EUR 517 million (or the Caravaggio electric multiple units). The framework agreement with Hitachi Rail covers 300 electric multiple units with a total value of EUR 2.6 billion.

Hitachi has also delivered 18 Blues trains worth EUR 86 million to date. These are the first “tribrid” trains (with three power sources: electricity, batteries, and diesel) in Europe, designed to revolutionize regional rail transport and reduce environmental impact.

Regarding regional transport, according to the FS Group’s 2025 financial report, investments reached EUR 979 million last year, of which approximately EUR 133 million were allocated to maintenance.

The modernization effort is not limited to regional transport. According to the director of Trenitalia, the program to renew the Intercity fleet, also funded through the PNRR, is moving forward. “By June 2026, all new Intercity trains will be put into service, following an investment of over EUR 500 million. The new rolling stock fleet includes hybrid-powered trains (electric, diesel, and battery), battery-electric trains (BEMU), and multiple units capable of reaching 200 km/h. “This program will enable the modernization of strategic lines, including non-electrified ones, increasing the efficiency and sustainability of services,” added Gianpiero Strisciuglio, CEO of Trenitalia.
