DB to equip ICE 3neo trains for operation in France and Poland

Deutsche Bahn (DB) is significantly expanding its international long-distance services with a EUR 200 million investment to equip its ICE 3neo fleet for cross-border operation in France and Poland. Up to 32 trains will be modified to run in both countries—marking the first time the ICE will offer direct services between Berlin and Warsaw.

The technical adaptations will be carried out by Siemens Mobility during production at its Krefeld plant. Currently, the ICE 3neo is in service on domestic routes and international lines between Frankfurt/Main, Brussels, and Amsterdam. DB expects a multi-year timeline for delivery and approval, with certification in France and Poland anticipated from 2031. The trains will continue operating in Belgium and the Netherlands.

“We want to connect Berlin and Warsaw with the ICE in the future. To do this, we are making the ICE 3neo even more international and investing an additional EUR 200 million in the certification of our flagship train for Poland and France,” said Dr Michael Peterson, DB Board Member for Long-Distance Passenger Transport. “The boom in international long-distance travel shows our growth strategy is working. We will only unlock the full potential of cross-border services if the right infrastructure decisions are made now.”

Siemens will equip the 32 ICE 3neo units with country-specific components, ensuring compatibility with the respective signalling and control systems. Once certified, the trains will be capable of operating between Germany and France, as well as Germany and Poland. Some units will see their delivery schedules extended through 2032 to accommodate the upgrade process.

“Cross-border mobility is a key element for a more connected Europe,” said Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility. “With our country-specific equipment, the ICE 3neo will be ideally adapted to signalling and infrastructure in the respective countries. This will enable direct services from Berlin to Warsaw and future connections to France—fast, comfortable, and climate-friendly.”

The expansion has also been endorsed by the German government.

“With the expansion of the ICE 3neo, cross-border services to Paris and Warsaw are receiving a real boost—thanks to technical expertise and necessary investment,” said Ulrich Lange, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Transport. “We fully support this step to deepen friendly cooperation with France and Poland—in line with the coalition agreement.”

90 ICE 3neo trainsets from Siemens Mobility

DB has ordered 90 ICE 3neo trainsets from Siemens Mobility, 29 of which have already been delivered. The first entered passenger service in November 2022. In June 2024, the ICE 3neo began operating on international routes from Frankfurt to Amsterdam and Brussels, replacing older ICE models and reducing service disruptions on those lines.

Passenger feedback has been positive. Among all ICE train types, the ICE 3neo has received the highest ratings for comfort and design. It is currently considered DB’s most modern and innovative long-distance train.

The new ICE 3neo interior design was introduced in October 2023 and features several passenger-focused improvements. Seats are designed as individual “retreats”, with greater adjustability and enhanced comfort. The interior uses flowing forms, wood accents, and high-quality fabrics in muted tones.

Further upgrades introduced in recent months include:

  • Wireless charging for smartphones in First Class
  • Oak wood panelling and ambient lighting for a more homely feel
  • Contactless features in toilets, including waste bins, soap, and flush systems
  • Baby/toddler seat in the universal toilet for solo-travelling parents
