DB Schenker introduces intelligent scanning glove

DB Schenker implements ProGlove – an intelligent scanning glove – at its warehouse in Eching near Munich. ProGlove is a device for scanning barcodes in the picking process. The small and lightweight scanning unit is attached to a glove worn by associates in the warehouse. ProGlove is placed on the back of a hand and it is activated by pressing the thumb and forefinger together.
After scanning a barcode, the associate receives optical, acoustic and haptic feedback. Visual communication with the warehouse management system (i.e. quantities, next pick location) can be conducted via a tablet.
In Eching, DB Schenker supplies the production of a leading German car manufacturer with automotive parts. Services include core warehouse functions such as inbound and outbound logistics, storage of automotive parts and empties handling, but also include value added services such as repackaging of disposable packaging into reusable packaging.
ProGlove significantly improves process efficiency. While traditional ring scanners are not ergonomic and difficult to use, ProGlove enables associates to work faster, safer and easier in the picking process. The associates can continuously deploy both hands during operations without having to search or reach out to a scanner in between. In turn, this results in process savings of up to 40% in comparison to usual scanners.
“The feedback from the warehouse staff during the trial period was consistently positive. For this reason, I am convinced that the use of the ProGlove will lead to increased productivity at our warehouse location in Eching. An extension to further warehouse locations is planned and will be realized soon”, says Tom Schmitt, Chief Commercial Officer & Member of the Board Contract Logistics, Schenker AG.
“The development of ProGlove follows the idea that humans will continue to be an important center of industry in the future. That’s why we’ve developed a lightweight and intuitive smart glove that can be used without any integration effort. ProGlove supports the employee in his daily work and connects him with Industry 4.0.” Thomas Kirchner, Co-Founder and CEO of ProGlove, believes.
