Deutsche Bahn has put a new storage yard into operation at the Ulm-Dornstadt container terminal, expanding the existing logistics infrastructure by approximately 38,000 square meters—the equivalent of more than five soccer fields.
The new area is intended for the storage of empty and loaded containers and supports the development of combined transport, which integrates rail and road freight transport.
“With the new storage area at the Ulm Dornstadt container terminal, we are creating space today for tomorrow’s volumes. In this way, we are strengthening combined transport in the region and making logistics more predictable for our customers,” said Ralf-Günter Kloß, executive manager at DB Cargo, responsible for the Combined Transport Division.

Local authorities, for their part, emphasized the importance of the expansion for the regional economy. “Containers are the shopping carts of our strong regional economy and a symbol of the export-oriented industry between the Alb and Oberschwaben. We are pleased to support the expansion of DB Intermodal Services’ capacity. It’s a good day for climate-friendly rail transport,” said Ulm Mayor Martin Ansbacher.
The expansion was completed in less than nine months and allows for greater flexibility in container handling, reducing the risk of logistical bottlenecks and improving the stability of supply chains.
The investment is linked to the expansion of the Ulm Dornstadt terminal, where the capacity for transferring cargo between road and rail transport is set to more than double by 2028. Together, the terminal and the warehouse form an important logistics hub in the European combined transport network.
DB Intermodal Services, part of the Deutsche Bahn Group, manages container warehousing and logistics services, supporting the integration of rail transport with maritime and road networks at a strategic freight transport hub in the region.
