Czechia selects designer for Chomutov hub development

The winner of the architectural competition for the new Chomutov multimodal terminal is the BYRÓ architekti studio, whose proposal was prepared by architects Tomáš Hanus and Jan Holub. The new terminal will be built in Chomutov, a city in the Ústí nad Labem Region, located near the border with Germany.

The jury, composed of representatives from Správa železnic, the City of Chomutov, and independent experts in architecture and transport infrastructure, chose their design from among six other competitors. A contract for design work will now be signed with the authors of the winning proposal.

In the competition, Boele studio came second, and Papundekl architekti + Landa  Ruhmkorf took third place.

“The aim of the competition was to select the most suitable design that meets both the architectural and transport requirements of the new interchange terminal. It will be developed as part of a comprehensive reconstruction of the railway line, which will increase capacity and speed, thereby shortening train journey times,” Jiří Svoboda, Director General of Správa železnic, said.
The winning proposal impressed the jury with the architectural quality of the terminal design. Its elegant and clean lines reflect the significance and function of the building, while its use of restrained materials and simple structural design contributes to a harmonious overall impression. The jury also praised the layout of public spaces and the transport connections, particularly the link to Lipská Street.

The Chomutov multimodal terminal is intended to integrate rail services with urban, regional, and long-distance buses, and will also include a large park-and-ride facility. The selected team will additionally prepare a conceptual design for a city park with a playground and sports facilities, as well as a possible layout for future urban blocks, which will serve as a basis for the city’s urban study and negotiations with landowners and developers.

The investment project also involves relocating the station building closer to the city centre, providing residents and visitors with a more comfortable and safer access to the trains.

The Chomutov station is an important railway junction, and Správa železnic is also preparing other projects along the so-called Podkrušnohorská Main Line or Sub-Ore Mountains Railway, a major railway route running along the northern edge of the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory) in the Czech Republic. The Cheb – Karlovy Vary – Chomutov – Most – Ústí nad Labem route runs through the north-west of Bohemia, roughly parallel to the German border.

The City of Chomutov’s initiative to explore the relocation of the bus station created ideal conditions for cooperation with Správa železnic. The result was a joint architectural competition brief for a multimodal rail and bus transport terminal, with the technical aspects further coordinated with the Ústí nad Labem Region.
