The Czech infrastructure manager, Správa železnic (SŽ), has officially launched modernization work on the 15-km Ruzyně–Kladno railway section, part of the Prague–Airport–Kladno line project. The work is scheduled for completion in 2029.
The tender was won by the bidder who proposed a price 500 million Czech korunas (EUR 20.6 million) lower than the initial estimates.
The work will last until 2029 and will be carried out by Subterra, OHLA ŽS, Elektrizace železnic Praha, and Swietelsky Rail, which submitted the most advantageous bid in the amount of 8.279 billion Czech koruna (EUR 341.24 million).
“The modernization of the Ruzyně–Kladno railway section will mean a better travel experience for people and will strengthen the role of rail as a reliable means of daily transportation to work or school.
I also appreciate the outcome of the open tender, where the price was reduced by hundreds of millions of crowns, which is good news for taxpayers,” said Transport Minister Ivan Bednárik.
In addition to modernizing the section between Prague-Ruzyně Station and Kladno, the project also includes the modernization of three stations, the demolition of one station, and its replacement with a new station, where a park-and-ride facility for over 300 cars will be built, along with bus connections. New stops will also be built in the Jeneček neighborhood of Hostivice and in Velké Přítočno.
The Prague – Airport – Kladno railway project is moving forward
The modernization of the Ruzyně–Kladno railway section represents the longest stage of the Prague–Airport–Kladno railway line. The reconstruction of the Negrelli Viaduct in downtown Prague is already complete, and the new Praha-Bubny station and the Praha-Výstaviště stop are already in operation. Trains are already running between the Kladno-Ostrovec and Kladno stations, where the new station building will also open later this year. In the coming weeks, the modernization of Masaryk Station will begin, marking the most complex phase of the project.
“The Prague–Airport–Kladno railway is taking its final shape, not only because we are starting construction on the longest section. What is especially important is that we are also making significant progress with preparations for the other stages,” said SŽ CEO Tomáš Tóth.
For several sections of the project, SŽ has already submitted applications for construction permits. The lines around the airport will be built by a private partner as part of a PPP project, a process currently underway that could be finalized in the near future.
The Prague–Airport–Kladno railway project will provide faster and higher-capacity transport, significantly improving connections between Prague, the airport, and Kladno, the largest city in the Central Bohemia region. The line will have fewer curves, allowing trains to travel at speeds of up to 145 km/h, reducing travel time to just 7 minutes—half the current travel time.
Thanks to the doubling of the entire line, train service will be more frequent and reliable. Stations will be connected to bus networks and parking lots. Replacing level crossings on the busiest roads with overpasses or underpasses will improve safety for both train passengers and drivers.
