Czech Railways launches EUR 3.3 billion EMU tender

Czech Railways (České dráhy) has announced a public tender for the acquisition of up to 133 new EMU 400 trainsets, intended to enhance public transport services in Prague and the Central Bohemian Region. The framework agreement is estimated at CZK 84.5 billion (EUR 3.3 billion), excluding VAT, with the new fleet expected to enter service from December 2029.

The procurement forms part of Czech Railways’ bid to secure future public service contracts within the Prague Integrated Transport system. While the framework covers a maximum of 133 trains, a minimum of 66 vehicles is guaranteed under the basic agreement. The final number will depend on the scope of the services eventually ordered by local authorities.

The dual-system EMU 400 trains, designed to operate on both 3 kV DC and 25 kV 50 Hz AC systems, will be capable of reaching speeds up to 160 km/h and accommodate at least 380 seated passengers. All units will feature a low-floor design and an air-conditioned interior across both first and second class.

Passengers can expect modern amenities including Wi-Fi, power sockets, onboard space for bicycles and prams, and an advanced audiovisual information system. The design also allows for interior layout flexibility to accommodate additional luggage or bicycle space, with future connections to destinations such as Václav Havel Airport in mind.

The tender also invites bids that include a full-service maintenance option for up to 30 years—15 years initially, with a potential 15-year extension. This includes provision for key spare parts and component exchange systems, although the service contract is not mandatory and will only be confirmed if considered cost-effective.

Deployment of the EMU 400 units is scheduled to begin with the 2029/2030 timetable. The final volume and cost of the contract will depend on the transport service requirements set by Prague and the Central Bohemian Region.
