CSX to implement collision avoidance system

Freight rail company CSX Corp., which provides freight rail operations in the US and Canada, will install Protran Technology’s Collision Avoidance System (CAS) on several hundred of its railway track maintenance machines, and eventually onto its entire fleet.
Protran’s CAS system works through a unique radio solution that provides consistent distance measurements and alerts to other vehicles in the area. The system can be expanded to protect workers or issue warnings at the end of work zones. All safety interactions are recorded for review in the event of an incident.
“Machine-to-machine collisions can be costly safety incidents. The utilization of our CAS provides the needed awareness to keep these types of collisions from occurring,” Protran Technology Vice President Jim Resio said.
