Croatia to start the reconstruction of the R202 mainline

HŽ Infrastruktura awarded Swietelsky a contract for the reconstruction of 21 km of Virovitica – Pitomača railway section.

HRK 170 million (EUR 22.7 million) is the value of the contract which is funded by a commercial loan with government guarantee. Within 18 months, Swietelsky must complete the reconstruction works.

The project envisages track replacement, the harmonization of the signalling, security and telecommunication systems, the modernisation of three stations along the section, including the construction of longer platforms, as well as the reconstruction of 22 level crossings.
Once completed, the transport speed will be increased from currently 80 km/h to 100 km/h, shortening the travel time.

“After last year’s significant achievements for the development of the railway infrastructure, we are determined to decisively start new projects in 2020. The completion of the reconstruction of Virovitica – Pitomača section, the passengers which travel on this part of Croatia [Eastern part] will benefit a fully functional, safe and reliable regional railway services,” Ivan Kršić, CEO of HŽ Infrastruktura, said.
The Virovitica – Pitomača section is the first of the three sections to be reconstructed on the R202 Varaždin – Dalj main line, which provides transport connection between Northwest, Northeast and Central Croatia.

The railway infrastructure manager secured HRK 449 million (EUR 60.1 million) for the renewal of the three sections on the R202 line for 2020 – 2024. In addition to this section, the Pitomača – Virje (22 km) and Virje – Koprivnica (20 km) sections will be reconstructed.

Currently, Croatia is modernising its railway network, with projects having a total value of EUR 1.5 billion.
