Work to eliminate critical points on Croatia’s railway network is nearing completion, and most of the projects will be finished by the end of summer.
The project, implemented by the railway infrastructure manager HŽ Infrastruktura, aims to increase train speeds and safety, as well as to modernize the infrastructure in accordance with European Union directives and technical specifications for interoperability.
The program includes the reconstruction and rehabilitation of 28 embankments and 17 bridges located across a large part of the Croatian railway network. Through these works, the infrastructure manager aims to improve operating conditions and increase the mobility of rail transport nationwide.
The total eligible cost of the project is EUR 25 million, of which 81% is funded by grants from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), with the remainder coming from Croatia’s state budget.
Most of the work will be completed by the end of summer
To date, work has been completed on 27 cuttings along the Oštarije–Split line, as well as on the Kolski put bridges near Knin, the Kambelovac bridge in Kaštel Kambelovac, and the bridge located on the Nova Kapela-Batrina–Pleternica section near the Ratkovica stop.
Work has also been completed on the Moštanik Bridge on the Strizivojna–Vrpolje – Slavonski Šamac line, on the Voćinka and Vojlovica bridges between Čačinci and Slatina, on the Brdovec footbridge near Zaprešić, on the Potok and Proteka bridges, as well as on the demolition of the Lomnica bridge on the line to Sisak.
The bridges on the Okučani–Nova Gradiška and Sibinj–Slavonski Brod sections, as well as the Penkovica Bridge on the line to Sisak and the bridge between Greda and Sisak on the M502 line, are in the final phase of construction.
Work is currently continuing on the Sava Jakuševac Bridge, located near the Zagreb marshalling yard, and on the project’s final embankment, Zvečaj. Meanwhile, work on the Lužnica Bridge on the Zaprešić–Savski Marof section is scheduled to begin in early fall.
According to HŽ Infrastruktura, some work has been delayed due to unfavorable weather conditions and high water levels during the winter, as well as the inability to temporarily close certain railway lines due to the simultaneous implementation of other strategic modernization projects.
All work to eliminate critical points on the Croatian railway network is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.
