Copenhagen Metro selects designers for M4 extension

Metroselskabet has selected MT Højgaard Danmark, together with consultants Rambøll and Cobe, to design the Copenhagen M4 extension to Ydre Nordhavn, which is planned for completion in 2030. The project involves the construction of two new elevated metro stations located on the northern section of Line 4.

Following the conclusion of the tender process, Metroselskabet chose the contractor MT Højgaard Danmark, with Rambøll and Cobe as consultants, to plan, design and, as intended, construct the two new stations and 1.6 km of elevated railway. The contract was tendered using an “early contractor involvement” model, and from a larger pool of applicants, three teams advanced to the final stage before a winning consortium was selected.

“I look forward to working with MT Højgaard Danmark and their team to develop and design the next two stations on the metro network. The team stood out particularly for their proposed approach to collaboration, design process and the pricing of contract works,” said Carsten Riis, CEO of Metroselskabet.

The project has now entered a collaboration phase, during which Metroselskabet, together with MT Højgaard Danmark, Rambøll and Cobe, will prepare the concept designs. The development of the Copenhagen Metro and the entire Nordhavn district is being carried out in cooperation with the City of Copenhagen, City & Port and a number of other stakeholders to create the best conditions for an active urban life and a high quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

The two new stations have been provisionally named v/Levantkaj and v/Nordhavn C. The station at v/Levantkaj will be situated in the heart of a future residential and commercial area, which will also include Nordhavn’s largest school.

When the container terminal relocates further out into Ydre Nordhavn in 2027, the southern quay will be transformed into an attractive harbour promenade. The v/Nordhavn C station will be located close to the green area Nordhavnstippen and Tunnelfabrikken, where new businesses, workshops, restaurants, art and cultural venues, leisure facilities and youth housing will open in the coming years.

Construction of the extension is expected to begin in 2027, with the aim of opening the new stations to passengers in 2030.

The M4 line extension will ensure efficient public transport from day one for the many people who will live, work and travel in the capital’s largest development area for years to come. Once the stations are completed, passengers to and from Ydre Nordhavn will have direct access to the inner-city districts and several major transport hubs, with a travel time of approximately seven minutes from the terminus at Nordhavn C to Østerport, and around 14 minutes to Copenhagen Central Station.

Nordhavn is currently the City of Copenhagen’s largest urban development area. Once fully developed around 2060, it is expected to be home to 35,000 residents. In March 2020, the two metro stations Nordhavn and Orientkaj opened in Inner Nordhavn, providing fast new connections to the rest of the city. In 2024, the 4.5 km southern extension of M4 to Sydhavn and Valby has been inaugurated. Today, around 7,000 passengers board or alight at one of these two stations on a typical weekday. The metro extension will ensure that approximately 80 percent of the urban area in Ydre Nordhavn will be located within 600 metres of the nearest metro station.
