Contract for Zagreb Central Railway Station renovation signed

The renovation is being financed through a loan from the European Investment Bank, secured by the Government of Croatia.

“With the signing of this contract, we are entering the key phase of the full renovation of the Zagreb Main Railway Station – the heart of Croatia’s railway network and a protected cultural landmark. We are creating the conditions for the station to become more modern, energy-efficient and accessible to all passengers, while preserving its historical and cultural value,” said Žarko Tušek, the Minister of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure.

The deadline for completing the technical documentation is two years, and the project will cover the structural and energy renovation of the station building, platforms and canopies, installation of new lighting, heating and cooling systems, and landscaping of the surrounding area. The aim is for the building to become self-sustainable, using renewable energy sources, particularly through the installation of solar panels on the platform canopies.

This contract marks the second phase of the station’s renovation project and includes the preparation of both the conceptual and main design projects, along with the acquisition of all necessary permits.

“The signing of this contract marks a significant milestone in the development of rail transport in the City of Zagreb. The 133-year-old station building is a cultural monument, and we are therefore obliged to preserve its original form as much as possible, while at the same time adapting it to the requirements of the 21st century,” said Ivan Kršić, President of the Management Board of HŽ Infrastruktura.

Zagreb Central Railway Station stands as Croatia’s largest rail terminal, with as many as 30,000 passengers passing through its historic halls every day.

Once the documentation is complete, the project will move into its third phase – the construction tender, with works expected to take around three years. The estimated value of the construction is approximately EUR 70 million.
