The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) has announced the award of the contract for the design, construction, and completion of the extension of the Red Line of the Riyadh Metro, which will extend the existing automated line by 8.4 km.
The contract was signed with a consortium led by Webuild, which also includes the Indian company L&T, the Saudi company Nesma, and the French company Alstom.
The project includes the construction of 7.1 km of tunnel and 1.3 km of elevated line, as well as five new stations, three of which will be underground. Two stations will be located within King Saud University, one serving the medical city and related faculties, and the other serving the central area of the campus. Three other stations will be located in Diriyah, one of which is planned as a future interchange with Line 7. The project is scheduled for completion in approximately six years.
The extension will connect King Saud University with the Diriyah Gate development project and will include five new stations, as part of efforts to complete the capital’s public transport network and improve connectivity between key areas, residential communities, and educational, cultural, and medical centers.
Minister of State, Member of the Cabinet, and Director General of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, Ibrahim Al-Sultan, emphasized that the Riyadh Metro Red Line extension project strengthens the city’s public transport network and completes the commission’s efforts to develop a sustainable urban transport ecosystem that connects Riyadh’s main centers, residential areas, and cultural and educational landmarks.
He noted that the project responds to the growing demand for public transport from residents and visitors since it began operating at the end of 2024, with the total number of passengers exceeding 173 million, reflecting the public’s confidence in the efficiency and quality of the services provided.
The Riyadh Metro Red Line extension project is part of the city’s automated metro network, recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest in the world. An essential component of the expansion project is the integration of the new section into the entire system of six automated lines, launched in Riyadh last December, which totals 176 kilometers and represents one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects worldwide.
