The Czech railway infrastructure manager, Správa železnic (SŽ), has selected Sagasta to design the new Brno-Černovice terminal, part of a comprehensive program to modernize the Brno railway hub.
The contract, awarded following a tender in which four bidders participated, covers the design of a new intermodal terminal and work to reconfigure the railway infrastructure, aimed at significantly increasing traffic capacity and efficiency.
Sagasta will prepare the necessary documentation to obtain permits, organize the tender for the construction work, coordinate the project with the relevant authorities, manage issues related to expropriations and property rights, and provide technical assistance throughout the construction phase.
The contract value is CZK 222.225 million (EUR 9 million), representing 80% of the maximum estimated value under the procurement procedure.
The reconfiguration of the lines will increase the capacity of the rail network
The modernization will transform both the passenger experience and train operations in the Czech Republic’s second-largest city. The centerpiece of the project is the new Brno-Černovice terminal, which will be built on a viaduct over Olomoucká Street and will replace the current train stop. Designed for regional trains, the terminal will feature four platforms, barrier-free access, elevators, and modern passenger facilities.
Urban public transit stops will be located beneath the terminal, facilitating transfers between trains and public transit. The project also includes space reserved for the construction of a future tram line.
The project also involves a major reorganization of the rail infrastructure. A seven-track section will be built between the new main station in Brno and Černovice, which will then branch into two four-track sections leading to Židenice and Slatina. The work will also include a new rail connection to Chrlice.
Through this extensive modernization, the authorities aim to increase the capacity and reliability of rail transport, as well as prepare the infrastructure for the development of regional services, long-distance trains, and future high-speed lines.
“Černovice will play a much more important role in the future configuration of the Brno rail network than it does today. The new terminal will improve connections with urban public transit and, at the same time, help increase the capacity of the rail lines in the eastern part of the city,” said Tomáš Tóth, Director General of Správa železnic.
