Contract awarded for Gipuzkoa rail branch of Basque Y HSR

Gipuzkoa rail branch Adif AV awarded the contract for drafting the initial track laying works on the 60 km Gipuzkoa rail branch part of the Basque Y high-speed rail project.

The EUR 603,519 contract represents a phase prior to the tendering process for the track laying works which will be contracted once the construction of the track-bed for the Gipuzkoa rail branch has been completed.

Adif AV is making progress on the track laying projects for the entire Basque Y high-speed rail line, both the Gipuzkoa and Biscay branches, as it has been entrusted with their implementation, as well as that of the remaining railway equipment and systems including electrification, signalling, and telecommunications.

In the case of the Biscay section, the 90.8 km Vitoria – Bergara Junction – Bilbao, Adif, in addition to promoting the work to complete the construction of its platform, is currently putting out to tender the drafting of the base project from which the track will be laid for this section.

With the awarded contract for Gipuzkoa rail branch, Adif AV is thus moving toward a new phase in the ongoing development of the Vitoria/Gasteiz – Bilbao – Donostia/San Sebastián – French border high-speed rail line, a strategic axis of the Atlantic Corridor, promoting various projects in different areas.

Adif AV is currently completing the Vitoria – Bilbao branch line platform for which 14 sections have already been completed and five are under construction, including three of the six sections that make up the Bergara Junction.

It is also working on projects for access to the capital of Biscay and the remodeling of the Bilbao Abando station. It is also making progress on the deployment of the third rail on the 19 km Astigarraga – Irun section, to adapt it for Iberian gauge and standard gauge traffic up to the border, and on the transformation and expansion of the latter station.

The company has also authorised the agreement with the Basque Government to build the new Astigarraga station and the corresponding agreement to build the Arkaute railway interchange, for integration into Vitoria-Gasteiz. It has also put out to tender the construction of the first section of the Burgos – Vitoria high-speed rail line, the axis that connects the “Y” to the rest of the 4,000 km high-speed network, and then to the French border at Irún.
