Contract approved for rail connection at Castellón Port

rail bridgeThe Spain’s Council of Ministers authorised the contract for the construction works on the rail-road bridge as part of the North Railway Connection of the Port of Castellón. 12.5 million is the value of the contract which is expected to be completed within 21 months.

EUR 18.5 million is the value of the investment for the rail interconnection project within the port.

The bridge, which will be made up of two identical moving parts located in a symmetrical position, will allow the passage through the inner and South Basin areas, leaving a channel width on each side of 50 metres. Its use will be both road and rail, although the traffic on it will not be carried out simultaneously and the port traffic that will operate in this railway-port infrastructure will be mainly containerized goods and solid bulk.

The rail-road bridge project is included in the 2021 Business Plan agreed by the State Ports and the Castellón Port Authority.

With this project, the southern access of the Port of Castellón will be connected with the current northern access, by a rail bridge that allows port’s north and fishing basin to be crossed.

Spain obtained a EUR 3.54 million CEF Transport funding under the 2019 call. EUR 17.7 million is the eligible cost of the project covering the improvement of the railway connectivity in the port of Castellón. The project will consist in the expansion works of the railway internal network of the Port, so that the docks and esplanades located at the South Basin will be connected with the North terminal and the current north railway access to the Castellón Port. A railway infrastructure in mixed gauge, the Iberian and standard (UIC) gauge with a total length of 3 km that fulfils all the interoperability requests is designed and will be implemented.

The second phase of the project will consist of the implementation of the necessary infrastructure for the development of the railway transport operations in the port though the endowment of railways to the south basin, that nowadays does not count on any railway connection.

The works will significantly improve the safety and efficiency of port traffic operations carried out in the area of Port of Castellón and the improvement of the rail connectivity in the Port of Castellón with the Mediterranean Corridor.
