PKP Intercity has officially launched the construction of a new locomotive depot in Warsaw, with the work being carried out by a consortium comprising Trakcja and DB Projekt.
The new locomotive depot in Warsaw is one of the most significant infrastructure investments by Poland’s long-distance rail operator.
The project in the Warszawa Grochów area includes the construction of a locomotive depot along with the associated facilities and infrastructure. The new hall will have a usable area of approximately 5,500 m². A locomotive washing hall, a modernized staff area, signaling facilities, and a rolling stock diagnostic station—including equipment for measuring axle pressure on the rail—will also be built.
“The new locomotive depot in Warsaw will significantly improve the preparation of trains for service. The development of the infrastructure goes hand in hand with the expansion of our rolling stock fleet, contributing to increased reliability and punctuality of services,” said PKP Intercity President Janusz Malinowski.
The project also includes a specialized facility for the maintenance of electric trains up to 153 meters in length, as well as a track-level inspection pit with a capacity of up to 10 tons, used for wheel replacement, along with equipment for measuring track load. In addition, the washing hall will allow for the cleaning of locomotives year-round, including the body and chassis.
“A modern railway means not only new trains, but also adequate technical infrastructure for their maintenance. The investment in Grochów is part of a broader modernization program and demonstrates that developing an efficient transport system requires simultaneous action in several areas,” said Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak, who attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
The Warsaw locomotive depot, part of a broad modernization program
The new depot project will enable more efficient preparation of locomotives for daily operations and is part of a broader program to modernize the company’s technical facilities.
Between 2025 and 2030, PKP Intercity plans to allocate EUR 800 million (PLN 3.4 billion) for the development of the infrastructure necessary for the maintenance and upkeep of rolling stock.
“The development of technical infrastructure is one of the pillars of PKP Intercity’s long-term strategy. By 2030, we intend to allocate approximately 3.4 billion zlotys for the modernization of technical facilities and industrial railway lines.
The investment in Warsaw is an important component of this program, as it will enable the infrastructure to be adapted for the operation of modern rolling stock and will increase the efficiency of train preparation for departure,” said Hanna Jażdżyk, a member of the Board of Directors of PKP Intercity.
At the same time, the operator is implementing other major projects, including in Przemyśl and Kraków, and new investment projects will be launched this year, including the development of railway infrastructure in Białystok and Lublin.
The construction of the new locomotive depot in Warsaw is part of PKP Intercity’s extensive investment plan for the period 2025–2030. The company estimates total investments of EUR 4.8 billion (PLN 20.3 billion) during this period, of which EUR 4 billion (PLN 16.9 billion) will be allocated to rolling stock, and nearly EUR 800 million (PLN 3.4 billion) to infrastructure. By 2030, all Category A and B stations are to be brought up to the standards required for the operation of modern trains.
