Construction begins for Foothill Gold Line extension

Foothill Gold Line extension Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority has launched the major construction works for Foothill Gold Line extension from Glendora to Pomona in Los Angeles County.

The project envisages the construction of a 14.6 km and four stations along the extension expected to be completed in 2025. The new stations will be added to the Gold Line system, known as L Line, in the cities of Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne and Pomona.

“There is a lot of work ahead to complete this project that is critically important to the region and to the corridor communities, and we thank our partners at the cities, LA Metro and others for the hundreds of hours they have put in to help us reach this milestone moment for the project,” said Authority’s Board Chairman, Tim Sandoval.

The major construction work is being carried out by the Kiewit-Parsons joint venture, who was awarded the design-build contract in 2019. The JV has also constructed the two sections of the Foothill Gold Line from Los Angeles to Pasadena, completed in 2003 and Pasadena to Azusa, completed in 2015 on time and underbudget.

The Foothill Gold Line extension from Glendora to Pomona is being built within an existing rail corridor that is shared with BNSF rail freight service. Over the next five years, the Kiewit-Parsons JV will relocate within the shared rail corridor more than 14.5 km of freight track and will install a double track LRT. Under the project, the JV will be responsible for the construction of the four stations with unique artwork created by city-selected station artists, will rebuild 21 at-grade street crossings, will renovate of build 19 bridge structures, will istall new communication systems and nine traction power supply substations, along with an overhead catenary  system, to power the light rail vehicles.

“The Foothill Extension project is a down payment on a more connected, dynamic, and equitable future for Angelenos –and it will pave the way to good-paying jobs and a stronger transportation network across our region,” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said.

The Foothill Gold Line from Glendora to Pomona is being funded mostly by Los Angeles County’s Measure M sales tax approved by voters in 2016, with residual funding from Measure R and State of California greenhouse gas reduction funds. If additional funding is secured by October 2021, the entire 19.8 km line from Glendora to Montclair will be completed altogether by 2028, adding additional stations in Claremont and Montclair.

When completed, the Foothill Gold Line will provide connections to important regional destinations like the LA County Fairplex, colleges and universities, historic downtown, museums, regional parks and open space areas. In addition, the extension will provide a direct link between the LA Metro and Metrolink systems, allowing riders from each system to easily transfer.
