Consortium selected for Copenhagen automated S-bahn trains

Danish State Railways (DSB) has chosen a consortium led by Siemens Mobility and Stadler to deliver a new generation of fully automated S-bahn trains for the Copenhagen suburban network, which is in the process of being transformed to unattended operation. The agreement, worth around EUR 3 billion (DKK 23 billion), also includes a 30-year maintenance programme.

The contract provides for the supply of at least 226 four-car electric multiple units. Testing of the first driverless S-trains is scheduled to begin in 2028, with initial automated operations planned from 2029. Passenger services using the new trains are expected to start from 2032.

Alongside train delivery, Siemens and Stadler will work closely with DSB on fleet maintenance. While the consortium will hold overall responsibility for maintenance performance, routine day-to-day activities will continue to be carried out by DSB personnel.

The first route to receive the new trains will be Line F, also known as the Ring Line (Ringbanen), which links København Syd in the south-west of the capital with Hellerup to the north of København H. Under the latest timetable plans, commercial operation on this line is due to commence in 2032.

Designed with a strong focus on passenger comfort and flexibility, the automated electric multiple units will offer more adaptable interiors than today’s S-trains and many comparable urban rail systems across Europe.

The new 56-metre automated EMUs will operate at speeds of up to 120 km/h and will be capable of running in multiple, with up to three train sets coupled together. Each unit will offer 156 seats, along with dedicated space for 16 bicycles and two wheelchair users, seamlessly integrated within the passenger areas.

The trains will feature flexible multi-purpose spaces designed to accommodate bicycles and large luggage, as well as dedicated work zones with tables for tasks such as using laptops, alongside conventional seating areas. For passenger security, the fleet will be fitted with a comprehensive on-board CCTV system, providing full surveillance throughout the train.

In September 2023, DSB has announced the bidders for the automated S-bahn fleet, following political approval under Denmark’s Infrastructure Plan 2035, adopted in June 2021.
