Kölner Verkehrsbetriebe (KVB) and Stadler have officially launched a major rolling stock procurement project in Cologne. Under a contract worth nearly EUR 700 million, Stadler will deliver 132 new high-floor light rail vehicles for the city’s public transport network, marking one of the largest modernisation programmes in KVB’s history.

The agreement was formally inaugurated at a ceremony in Cologne attended by representatives from both companies. Delivery of the first trains is expected to begin in 2029.
A new generation for Cologne’s mobility transition
“We are very pleased to have secured one of the world’s leading rolling stock manufacturers,” said Stefanie Haaks, CEO of KVB. “Modern, comfortable light rail vehicles are a key reason for people to switch from cars to public transport. With these new trains, we will make an important contribution to the mobility transition in Cologne and the region. We are very grateful to the City of Cologne for its financial support of the project in these challenging economic times.”
Jörn Schwarze, KVB Board Member for Technology, added: “The new vehicles are perfectly tailored to our needs. With the option of extending trains using an intermediate module, we can significantly increase capacity and make more effective use of our infrastructure.”
Two coupled trains will provide space for up to 470 passengers. Each unit will be equipped with a rapid coupling system, allowing them to form continuous, walk-through trains. The order also includes 34 intermediate modules, each ten metres long, to extend selected vehicles to around 70 metres in length, greatly enhancing passenger capacity.
Advanced technology
“This partnership with KVB is a significant milestone for us,” said Peter Spuhler, Chairman of the Stadler Group. “With 132 new high-floor light rail vehicles, we are not only delivering the latest vehicle technology but also reaffirming our commitment to sustainable mobility. Stadler stands for quality, innovation and long-term reliability – values we share with KVB.”
Jure Mikolčić, CEO of Stadler Germany, commented: “We are delighted to help shape the future of public transport in Cologne. These new vehicles combine state-of-the-art technology with exceptional flexibility – including modular expansion options. Together with KVB, we are setting new standards for comfort, efficiency and accessibility in urban rail transport.”
The new trains will feature the latest technical and safety systems, including a driver’s cab with enhanced visibility, a video-based mirror system to eliminate blind spots, and adaptive cockpit displays. An integrated passenger counting system will support operational planning, while hybrid aluminium wheels reduce both weight and noise.
Inside, passengers will benefit from energy-efficient climate control, LED lighting, large 29-inch information displays, and wider gangways throughout a fully accessible, open-plan interior. Every aspect of the design – from materials to colour contrast – has been planned for maximum barrier-free access and passenger comfort.
Built for longevity
The new vehicles are designed for a service life of over 30 years and will replace the existing Series 2200/2300 and 5100 trains currently in operation. Stadler will provide long-term support, including spare parts supply, preventive maintenance, and technical assistance to ensure reliability and efficiency over the trains’ lifetime.
The first ten vehicles and five intermediate modules are scheduled for delivery in 2029 for pre-series operation. Full series production will follow between 2030 and 2032, with the new fleet gradually entering service on lines 4, 13 and 18.
