The signalling system at the Tura depot, on Line 1 of the Cairo metro, is to be modernised as part of a project awarded to CASCO. The current installations have been in operation for over 40 years, and the new system will also be prepared for the future integration of a CBTC solution on the main line.
The Chinese company China Railway Signal & Communication Corporation (CRSC) has announced that it has been awarded a contract to modernise the signalling system at the Tura depot, used by Line 1 of the Cairo Metro.
The EPC contract for the modernisation of the signalling installations was awarded to CASCO, following the company’s involvement in the Ramadan 10th City rail project in Egypt.
The Tura depot is used for train maintenance and stabling and has been in operation for over four decades; the existing signalling equipment has now reached an age that necessitates its replacement.
SIL4-level safety system
The new system is designed to meet SIL4 safety requirements, the highest level of safety integrity used for such railway systems.
The signalling system will manage shunting operations within the depot, maintenance activities, and the entry and exit of trains.
The modernisation is also expected to enable an increase in depot access capacity, shorter intervals between trains and more efficient use of the available capacity on Line 1.
Preparation for the future CBTC system
One of the project requirements is to maintain compatibility with the existing signalling system on Line 1 during the transition period.
At the same time, the new infrastructure will include interfaces ready for the future integration of a CBTC system on the main line.
CBTC, a communications-based train control system, enables more precise tracking of trains and shorter headways, and is widely used to increase the capacity of metro lines.
Line 1, one of the oldest parts of the Cairo Metro
Line 1 of the Cairo Metro has been in operation since the 1980s, and the modernisation of the Tura depot forms part of the wider programme to renew the ageing infrastructure and systems of the main line.
