Chennai metro_325The awaited CMRL project will make Chennai stand alongside Kolkata, New Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Jaipur to have metro connectivity. In the first phase, the Metro Rail service will connect Alandur in south Chennai and Koyambedu in the north. Each train having four coaches is expected to cover the one-way distance in 18 minutes.
The route dedicated to the public is an elevated structure covering a distance of 10.15 km, consisting of Alandur, Ekkathuthangal, Ashok Nagar, Vadapalani, Arumbakkam and Koyambedu Railway stations besides the yard at the last stop. The ten kilometer elevated stretch falls on the second corridor that runs for about 22km connecting Chennai Central with St Thomas Mount.
The 45 km Metro Rail project is estimated to cost Rs 14,600 crore (USD23 bn) and would cover two routes– the 23.085 km Wannarapet to Airport section– and the 21.961 km stretch from Chennai Central to St.Thomas Mount. The metro rail is expected to cover 32 stations in the coming years. In a bid to provide a seamless travel, the metro rail has been designed to connect Chennai Airport and Chennai Central railway station.
