CFR SA resumes traffic on Bucharest northern Rail Belt

Closed to rail traffic over the past five years, Pasărea – Mogoșoaia section, part of Bucharest Rail Belt, will resume rail services on 11 September. Freight train traffic between Bucharest and Constanta is now suffocated by the traffic and prioritisation of a large number of passenger trains.

CFR SA representatives invested in the reopening of Pasărea – Mogoșoaia section which facilitates the traffic of both freight and passenger trains on Bucharest North – Chitila – Mogoșoaia – Voluntari – Pasărea -Fundulea – Constanta route.

Thus, trains to Chitila will no longer cross Bucharest, but use instead Bucharest’s Rail Belt which will ease traffic in the area.

With the reopening of this section, rail transport capacity in the area will increase by over 30 trains a day and this will bring an annual additional income of over EUR 3 million to CFR from the track access charges (TUI).

The reopening of Pasărea – Mogoșoaia section will decongest the traffic of both passenger and freight trains, travelling to and from Constanta.

Repairs and replacement of sleepers on the section have been delivered by Wiebe Romania and took less than 30 days.

This project has been supported by both the Ministry of Transport and Bucharest Municipality and the two officials hope it would be a solution to reducing the number of accidents in Băneasa Brige area.

The transit of trains to Romania’s most important maritime port, the port of Constanta, is generally extremely affected in summer by the numerous passenger trains travelling to and from Constanta.

The 225-km long Bucharest North-Constanta section is part of the pan-European Corridor IV that in Romania travels from Curtici – Constanta (northern branch) to Arad – Calafat (the southern branch).

The modernisation of this section, for speeds of 160 km/h, was estimated at around EUR 1 billion, with funds mostly coming from the European Union.

By supporting works for the rehabilitation and modernisation of Corridor IV, the European Union has underlined the importance of rail access to Constanta Port which basically ensures the development of the port which is the largest in South-East Europe.
