Romania signed over EUR 500 million contract for Corridor IV modernisation

The Romanian national rail infrastructure manager CFR SA and FCC – Astaldi – Convensa consortium signed the contract worth RON 2.63 billion (EUR 572.8 million) for the modernisation of the railway infrastructure and superstructure on Gurasada-Simeria rail section. The section is located on TEN-T priority axis 22 (Rhine-Danube Corridor, northern branch) which provides rail connection of Nürnberg-Prague-Vienna-Budapest-Curtici-Simeria-Brasov-Bucharest-Constanta.

The contract’s objective is the modernisation of 40.88 km of rail infrastructure and superstructure for passenger trains to travel at maximum speeds of 160 km/h, embankment works and consolidations on the whole distance, the construction of 17 bridges (of which 3 over Mures River), 27 culverts, 4 overpasses, 3 underpasses, civil engineering works in 9 railway stations (including commercial stops), electrification and energy supply works, as well as implementation of ERTMS traffic safety system (ETCS level 2+GSM-R). The financing source is ensured from non-reimbursable and state budget funds and the execution deadline is 3 years, plus a grace period of 2 years.

The investment programmes carried out by CFR SA contribute to the development of the railway infrastructure by improving transport quality, increasing traffic speed to 160 km/h for passenger trains and to 120 km/h for freight trains, developing trade relations with transport operators and supporting the relaunch of regional economy.
