CargoBeamer, an operator specializing in the intermodal transport of semi-trailers by rail, launched a new route between Stuttgart and Milan this week, expanding its service on the Germany–Italy route through the Swiss Alps. The new service began operating on Monday and follows the January launch of the Liège–Domodossola connection.
The new route connects the DUSS terminal in Kornwestheim, near Stuttgart, with the Malpensa Intermodale terminal, located in the northwest of the Milan metropolitan area. The service replaces the previously operated connection between Stuttgart-Kornwestheim and Domodossola.
Four round trips per week, with plans for expansion
CargoBeamer announced that the new link will initially operate with 4 round trips per week, with the frequency set to increase to 5 weekly trips in the medium term.
For rail traction, the company is once again collaborating with SBB Cargo International, an operator active on the transalpine corridor.
According to CargoBeamer, each semi-trailer transported on this route enables a reduction in CO2 emissions of approximately 88% compared to diesel road transport.
The second connection replacing the former Rolling Highway
The company says that the new Stuttgart – Milan service is the second connection introduced to take over the remaining capacity following the closure of the Rolling Highway service between Freiburg and Novara. Thus, CargoBeamer is expanding its transalpine network along the corridor between Germany, the Benelux countries, and Italy.
The operator emphasizes that the service allows for the transport of all types of semi-trailers. In addition to standard units that can be handled by crane, the connection is also open to non-crane-handled semi-trailers, including refrigerated trailers, box trailers, waste transport units, as well as containers and mobile boxes.
CargoBeamer is banking on demand between southwestern Germany and the Milan area
“Following the highly successful launch of the Liège–Domodossola service, we are seeing strong momentum and clear demand for additional capacity in intermodal transport between southwestern Germany and the Milan metropolitan area. Our new service directly addresses this need. With our new partner terminal in Milan-Sacconago, we are very well positioned to serve freight flows destined for road and air transport and to continue expanding our network in northern Italy,” said Boris Timm, COO of CargoBeamer.
