The Government of Canada has announced an additional federal contribution of over CAD 1.1 billion to support the completion of the Quebec City tramway and the extension of the Montréal Metro Blue Line. This funding will bolster the development of vital infrastructure aimed at enhancing mobility in the region, driving economic growth, and addressing environmental challenges.
The TramCité project involves the construction of a 19 km fully electric tramway line, including approximately 1.9 km underground. The project will see the creation of 29 stations, five interchanges, two park-and-ride facilities, an operations and maintenance centre, and other necessary infrastructure, such as centralized control stations and street furniture. The vehicles will be powered by a hybrid system combining an overhead contact line and batteries.
In 2019, the federal government committed over CAD 1.1 billion to the TramCité project. Now, the contribution is being increased by an additional CAD 332.3 million, bringing the total federal investment to more than CAD 1.4 billion.
Montréal Metro Blue Line extension
The Blue Line extension will involve the construction of five new metro stations over approximately six kilometres, alongside supporting infrastructure such as two bus terminals and an underground pedestrian tunnel. The project is slated for completion in 2031. The federal government had initially pledged over CAD 1.3 billion for this project and is now boosting its contribution by an additional CAD 650 million, increasing the total to over CAD 1.9 billion.
In addition, CAD 202.8 million is being allocated to upgrade the train control system on the entire Montréal Metro Blue Line, which will replace the existing fixed block system with a modern, technology-driven solution.
