CAF to supply 19 Urbos trams for Tours’ new tram line

CAF has signed a contract with the Syndicat des Mobilités de Touraine to supply 19 Urbos trams for Tours’ future tramway Line 2, connecting La Riche and Chambray-lès-Tours. The agreement also includes associated fleet parts and special tools.

The new trams will resemble those currently in service on Line 1, featuring a fully low-floor design for easy accessibility. Each 42-metre tram will accommodate up to 280 passengers and include multipurpose areas for strollers, bicycles, and wheelchairs.

Designed to operate on both the new Line 2 and the existing Line 1, the CAF Urbos trams will be equipped with onboard energy storage modules, allowing them to run without overhead power lines on a 2 km section between Tours train station and Place Choiseul in the historic city centre. This solution helps preserve the urban landscape while reducing infrastructure costs.

Tours, known for its Gothic architecture and its role as the gateway to the Loire Valley, has recently commenced construction of the 12.5 km Line 2, which will feature 22 stations and is set to open in 2028. The expansion aims to improve intermodality between tram and bus services while promoting cycling and walking through dedicated infrastructure.

The new tram line will enhance connectivity across the metropolitan area, linking hospitals, educational institutions serving nearly 30,000 students, and various cultural, sports, and leisure facilities.

Following its selection by Montpellier and Marseille, CAF continues to strengthen its presence in the French market.
