CAF to deliver extra-long trams for the Vitoria network

CAF and Euskotren, the public transport operator in the Basque Country, have signed a contract for the supply of nine extra-long trams for the tram network in Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of the Basque autonomous community in northern Spain. The new vehicles will serve the extension of the network to the Zabalgana district. The contract is worth almost EUR 49 million, and deliveries are scheduled for 2028–2029.

The new vehicles will be 44 meters long, consist of seven modules, and offer a capacity of up to 400 passengers. They will be similar in size to the extra-long trams already in operation on the network.

Additional equipment and driving simulator

In addition to the nine trams, the contract also includes the delivery of spare parts (replacement components required for maintenance), worth nearly EUR 4 million, as well as a driving simulator, estimated at EUR 1.19 million, which will be used to train tram drivers.

Focus on comfort and accessibility

The new trams will incorporate a number of improvements designed to increase passenger comfort, including a modernized air conditioning system designed to cope with periods of high temperatures.

At the same time, the project places a strong emphasis on universal accessibility. Although the trams already in operation are 100% low-floor and comply with legal requirements, the new units will introduce additional standards:

signage adapted to the new universal accessibility criteria;

removal of folding seats to create more fluid interior spaces;

color differentiation of priority seating for easier identification.

According to the operator, these changes aim to ensure equal access to public transport for all categories of passengers, including people with reduced mobility, the elderly, and passengers with disabilities.
