Bulgaria launches EMU tender

BDZ Passenger Services has announced a public procurement procedure for the supply of 16 new electric multiple units, with an estimated value of BGN 246.8 million (EUR 126.18 million).

According to the technical requirements, the new EMUs would be configured in 4 or 5 cars and will be designed for passengers with reduced mobility.

The new EMUs will be equipped with video surveillance system, Wi-Fi and catering area. They will be designed to run at speeds of 160 km/h.

The selected companies will submit technical and price offers. The price is the main criteria and should include maintenance costs and average expenses per passenger carried.

It is expected that the newly produced EMUs will be delivered within 36 months from the date of signing the contract and the first train will be delivered 24 months after its signature.

The procedure is part of a general plan to improve the conditions for passenger transport and the strategic development of state-owned railway company, including the modernisation of the existing fleet and the procurement of new rolling stock.

For the maintenance of its fleet, recently, the operator signed a EUR 70 million contract with Alstom.
