The City of Brescia has officially launched construction work on the new T2 Fiera–Pendolina tram line, a EUR 426 million urban infrastructure project that will transform mobility in the city and help reduce emissions from road transport.
The groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of one of the most significant public transportation investments in northern Italy. The new line will be 11.3 km long, serve the city’s main areas, and provide a fast connection between the Pendolina neighborhood and the Fiera area.
The project is being carried out by a consortium consisting of Manelli Impresa (49.4%), Alstom (26.95%), and Hitachi Rail (23.65%), based on the EUR 326 million contract awarded by Brescia Mobilità in June 2025. The new infrastructure will include numerous modern stations and will incorporate technologies designed to increase energy efficiency and improve the quality of public transportation services.
The new line will reduce traffic and carbon emissions
Local authorities estimate that the T2 line will encourage a shift from car travel to public transit, helping to reduce traffic congestion, CO₂ emissions, and improve air quality.
According to the implementation schedule, construction will take approximately four and a half years, and the new line is scheduled to begin operations in 2030.
“We are beginning construction on infrastructure that will change the way residents get around the city and contribute to the development of more sustainable mobility for future generations,” said Laura Castelletti, mayor of Brescia.
The new tram line is part of Brescia’s strategy for developing sustainable urban mobility and is one of the most significant investments in public transportation in Italy, supported by national and local funds. The project’s implementation will help increase the appeal of public transportation and contribute to achieving the decarbonization goals set by Italy and the European Union.
“The T2 line is a strategic project for the city’s public transportation system. It will complement the existing network and provide a modern, efficient, and sustainable service for the residents of Brescia,” said Eugenio Zoia, president of Brescia Mobilità.
