Brazil delays tender for North-South railway

The planned tender for the concession of the southern section of the North-South railway (FNS), initially scheduled for next February, could be delayed by at least three or four months. The stretch being granted is 1,537 kilometres long and runs from Porto Nacional (TO) to Estrela D’Oeste (SP). Valec, the state-owned company building the tracks, is hard-pressed to complete it in time amid a budget crunch while investors question the demand calculations issued by the National Agency of Ground Transportation.
The challenges have led the government to expect bidding only by the end of the first half of 2018. The 30-year concession was expected to bring R$1.6 billion (EUR 411 million), but could fetch less if the winning concessionaire faces further investment obligations, including finishing the tracks.
