Bozankaya wins Kocaeli metro train contract

Kocaeli metro trains Bozankaya has won the contract to supply the Turkish city of Kocaeli  metro trains that will serve the 15 km–long metro system.

This is the first Turkey-made metro trains to be delivered by Bozankaya with the first trains expected to be sent to the city in the fourth quarter of 2022.

The offer made by the Turkish rolling stock manufacturer left behind “giant global competitors including CRRC”, according to the.

Having competed against the giant industry leaders like CRRC in long and hard negotiations for the rolling stock tender for Kocaeli metro line, Bozankaya managed to agree with the Turkish government for the production of 28 metro cars.

The contract involves the supply of seven train sets, consisting of four cars each that will have to be delivered within only 30 months.

Designed and produced by Bozankaya, Kocaeli metro trains will be driverless and equipped with cutting-edge technology. “Being the first domestic rolling stock exporter of Turkey, Bozankaya now takes the pride of providing its locally designed and produced vehicles to serve its homeland Turkey for the public use,” the company says.

Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality is developing the Gebze – Darica metro line that will be served by 12 stations and one depot. The line is constructed by a joint venture comprising Meting, Metgün, Eze and Gokçe Ltd and is designed by Prota using BIM technology.

The metro line that will connect the cities of Gebze and Darıca in Kocaeli Province, is expected to be opened by the end of 2023.

The metro trains will be manufactured at Bozankaya plant in Ankara that in 2018 was expended by a 100,000m2 production centre in the Sincan 1st Organized Industrial Zone on the outskirts of Ankara. This facility, that required an investment of EUR 50 million, was specifically designed to produce rail system vehicles such as metro trains, trams as well as electric commercial vehicles such as the trambus and e-bus.

On the metro train development sector, in 2016 Bozankaya partnered with Siemens Mobility to deliver 22 four – car trains to Bangkok, Thailand. The last metro train entered operation in October 2019 on the Green Line extensions. All the 88 metro cars were designed and manufactured in Turkish factories.

Bozankaya was founded in 1989 in Germany as a research and development company, and now is one of the most successful rolling stock manufacturers and electric vehicles. Offering top-of-the-line technology in design and production with advanced environmental-friendly functions and reduced operational costs, Bozankaya keeps working on further innovation at its Ankara factories with a capacity of producing 300 metro cars per year.

The company is involved in tram production offering 100% low floor design and low-noise transport solution. In 2019, the Turkish company has signed several tram and trolleybus contracts with Romanian cities. They have a total value of EUR 200 million. In July 2019, the company and the Timisoara municipality signed a EUR 33 million contract to supply 16 high performance catenary-free low-floor trams with an option for 24 additional vehicles. In November 2019, the Bozankaya and the city of Iasi signed a EUR 29.6 million contract to deliver 16 trams.
