Belgium to inaugurate the longest national railway tunnel

belgiaThe Liefkenshoek railway will be inaugurated on 9 December, as part of an important stage of improving the connection to the railway network of the Anvers Port. The new 16.2km connection connects the Anvers-North railway to the Lierre-Aerschot railway.
The construction of the line has required the construction of the Liefkenshoek railway tunnel with a length of 6.7 km, the longest tunnel in Belgium. The new connection will reduce the time to Anvers of freight trains which have been so far forced to pass by Anvers-Berchem and the Kennedy Tunnel, a railway with intense passenger train traffic. Every year, 180 million tonnes of freight cross the Anvers Port.
