Beijing metro to improve electronic fare payment system

Starting from May, passengers will be able to pay for fares on the Beijing Metro using QR code electronic payment systems like Alipay. All entrance gates to subway stations in the city will be equipped with QR code sensors. The new system is set to completely replace in the future the current Near Field Communication (NFC) payment technology.
The move hopes to reduce congestion and queue lines on the Beijing rail transit system, which records 10 million journeys per day, with 15% of passengers queuing to purchase one-way tickets at stations.
The new project is not related to the fare payment system introduced last year, that allowed Beijing commuters to enter city subways using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. Unlike the NFC technology that limited its use to Android phones, the new system accepts any phone that is connected to an electronic payment system.
