Barcelona air-rail link to receive EIB support

The European Investment Bank has under appraisal the Fomento-Barcelona rail project for which intends to offer a EUR 225 million support.
The total value of the project is EUR 450 million and consists of a double-track railway line of approximately 4.5 km, mostly in a tunnel, to access the two terminals of El Prat Airport in Barcelona. In September 2017, Adif has started the tunneling works. Works on the air-rail connection started in 2015.
The project was proposed almost nine years ago and civil works were awarded in 2010 to construction companies Ferrovial, Sacyy and Copcisa, but due to financial problems, the project was put on hold. It was restarted in 2015, when the Ministry of Public Works and Transport launched the construction on the railway project.
The air-rail link project is essential for airport’s passenger mobility and is an important link on the European network, as Barcelona airport is situated on a main core Trans-European Transport Network.
Barcelona Airport is the main airport of Catalonia with more than 47 million passengers in 2017. The airport is situated 14 km far from the city center.
