Austria completes first phase of electrification of Mattersburg cross-border line

Austrian Railways (ÖBB) has completed the first phase of modernization and electrification of the Mattersburg line, which will be fully electrified by 2027 and will also have modern, accessible stations. Approximately €143 million will be invested over the next few years. The line will be electrified by 2027, stations will be modernized and adapted for accessibility, and the tracks will be renewed.

In the first phase of work, carried out from October to the end of November 2025, the focus was on driving piles for the foundations of the contact poles, on which the electric line for operating trains will be mounted. All trains, including late-night trains, are running normally again on the Mattersburg line.

Not only are the main routes from west to east and north to south being modernized to prepare them for the future, but the regional rail network is also benefiting from extensive investment. That is why the electrification and modernization of the Mattersburg line is part of ÖBB’s modernization plan.

“The electrification of the Mattersburg railway line is a decisive step towards modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly mobility in Burgenland. As the minister responsible for this area, my role is to pave the way for a sustainable future for transport. By expanding the railway infrastructure, we are not only creating an attractive alternative to private transport, but also increasing safety by eliminating level crossings and replacing them with underpasses,” said Peter Hanke, Federal Minister for Innovation, Mobility, and Infrastructure, who was present at a construction site for the project.

Next year, during the main construction phase, a further complete interruption of rail traffic is planned on the Wiener Neustadt Hbf – Sopron section between February and December 2026 to carry out major works.

“The Mattersburg line has played a central role in the region’s public transport network for decades. Electrification and modernization bring real improvements for all commuters and for everyone who depends on reliable connections every day. The upgrades – from accessible stations to quieter and more environmentally friendly transport – add value to Mattersburg and strengthen our city as an attractive place to live and work,” said Claudia Schlager, Mayor of Mattersburg.

The Mattersburg line modernization and electrification project also includes the modernization of six stations, the doubling of the existing line on certain sections, the modernization of railway facilities, including signaling, drainage, cabling, and lighting, as well as the construction of Park & Ride and Bike and Ride facilities at five stations.

The Mattersburg regional line connects Wiener Neustadt station via Mattersburg to Loipersbach-Schattendorf, and from there continues to the Hungarian border in Sopron. Work began in 2024 and will be completed in 2027, when the line will be operated by electric trains.
