Arup and DB selected for Victoria rail development strategy

Victoria rail investment planRail Projects Victoria appointed Arup and Deutsche Bahn as the rail operational planning adviser for Victoria rail investment plan which includes projects in Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Arup will support the development of a network-wide rail strategy and operating plans for defined rail corridors. This will ensure coordinated delivery of the planned future benefits from each project through effective operating strategies, while also ensuring their integration and management of interfaces and timings.

Arup’s experience of operational planning will be complemented by DB’s access to front-line rail operation’s best practice and rail delivery expertise.

The planned investment requires Arup and Deutsche Bahn to identify and interrogate the integration between the new projects and the existing rail lines and systems, so that the state-wide rail network can evolve and operate efficiently.

“Our work will allow RPV to progress its projects from concept through the design and delivery stages with confidence regarding investment priorities, network outcomes and passenger experience,” said Doug Pickering, Australian Rail Planning Leader.

Rail Projects Victoria (RPV) envisages rail investment programme in Melbourne including Melbourne Airport rail link, faster rail services for the growing city of Geelong and the Western Rail Plan that seeks to progressively improve rail connectivity to the booming western suburbs.

Construction works for Melbourne Airport rail link are expected to begin in 2022, if approvals will take place as it is planned. The construction for the 27-km rail link is expected to take up to nine years.

For the railway connection between Melbourne and Geelong, the investigations will be focused on more frequent and more reliable regional services, deedicated rolling stock, electrification of services, the development of the Melbourne Airport rail link as well as a new transport superhub at Sunshine.

The Western Rail Plan will include two new electrified lines, measures to increase the capacity between Sunshine and the CBD, as well as major investment for Geelong and Ballarat lines to allow trains to run at speeds of more than 160 km/h.
